Getting starting with commissions.
Sometimes someone falls insanely in love with one particular painting. This is a usually good thing. Sometimes it can be a bad thing if the painting has already sold, is too big, is too small, is completely a crazy color, or is almost — but not quite, what you need for your specific situation.
The answer is to order a commissioned painting from me!
I will gladly paint an original, made to order, painting for you in the dimensions and general color palette that you desire.
The easiest way to do this is to ask me to paint one that is:
… sort of like one I have already painted, but just slightly different… color, size, texture…
If you have a specific composition in mind, such as your favorite field, house, or mountain then things get more complicated. I don’t ordinarily paint from photographs. It messes with my happiness.
So if you have something very specific in mind, let’s talk about it. Shoot me an email, let me know what you are thinking and I will let you know if I am the artist for you.
I am very fortunate in that I don’t have to accept commissions that deal with subject matter or compositions that I don’t connect with. For instance, living here in the Southeastern USA for all of my life, I am not a good choice if you desire a Alaskan sunset.
The hassle factor
I charge about 20% more for commissioned paintings. Painting is a journey. You start at the beginning and you wind up somewhere else.
If you are requesting a re-paint of a work I created in the past, there is extra difficulty involved for me as an artist to travel back in time and get into the zone that I was in when I painted it the first time.
I call this the hassle factor and it costs a little more.
Rush Jobs
First, I simply must ask:
Are you absolutely sure that you want me to rearrange my life and create your artwork in a environment of pressure and stress in order to meet your personal deadline?
If the answer is yes, and you need something for an anniversary, wedding, birthday or other occasion, please tempt me with an offer. Keep in mind to complete your rush job I will be dropping most everything I have going on in my own life to do this for you so I would suggest an offer that includes a generous bonus.
Seriously, I am not able to accept many rush jobs, but occasionally my schedule allows it. So if you are in a hurry, please don’t hesitate to ask me. And yes, I will need extra compensation to do this. Please give some thought to how much extra you are willing to pay for this extraordinary service.
You gotta be kidding me!
With all these rules and extra costs it would seem that I don’t want to do commissioned paintings at all. Well, because my originals sell fairly well, I am able to have a more focused commission policy than some other artists.
In the past, I have tried to paint whatever, whenever, and whoever my clients requested. Trust me, the work falls flat when the artist isn’t feeling it. That’s why I don’t paint dogs, cats, kids, and other subjects that are frequently commissioned.
Actually, I get a great deal of pleasure from doing commissioned work. I really enjoy connecting with collectors and clients. I love to paint up special, one of a kind pieces that become a perfect focal point for their home or office. I would love to paint for you too!
I have found that most people are a little timid about asking about commissions, especially if they haven’t ordered one before. It’s really an easy process and I think it is a lot of fun for the client too!
I am a rather laid-back, nice person. So if you are interested in a commissioned painting, by all means email or call me so we can talk more about it.
